How to Stay Motivated (Even When You Don’t Feel Like It)

Motivation is overrated. In a world where we can get anything we want with the click of a button—groceries, Amazon, Netflix—getting the things we actually need (like a solid workout) feels like a whole different story. Training is tough. It requires effort, discomfort, discipline, and, above all, delayed gratification. And let’s be honest: most of us struggle with that last one.

Here’s the truth: I’m rarely “motivated” to train. If I waited until I felt motivated to work out, I’d probably never do it. Motivation might spark the fire, but discipline is the fuel that keeps it burning bright. That’s why I’ve built a routine, turned it into a habit, and communicated it with my support system to help me stay accountable.

Over the years, sticking to my workouts has done more for my self-esteem and confidence than anything else. Lifting heavy weights? Running fast? Abs? They all come and go. But the belief in myself, the confidence that I can count on myself no matter what—those are the most important gains I’ve made.

So if you're struggling with motivation, you’re not alone. Here are a few things that can help:

  1. Recognize that EVERYONE struggles with motivation. It’s normal. The key is not waiting for the perfect moment, but showing up anyway.

  2. Communicate with your significant other or friends. Accountability makes a huge difference. When you share your goals, others can support and help keep you on track.

  3. Create a routine. Routines make things automatic. Keep it simple. When working out becomes a habit, you don’t need to rely on motivation—you just do it.

  4. Cut back on unhealthy habits like drugs or alcohol. These things can derail your energy and focus. Reducing them will help you stay consistent in the long run.

  5. Sign up for a challenge or competition. Nothing keeps you more committed than having a specific goal with a deadline.

At the end of the day, it’s not about waiting for the motivation to hit. It’s about showing up for yourself, even when you don’t feel like it. Build that consistency, and you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve.
